Lewis and Clark Statue
Removed from St. Louis
Riverfront Near Historic
"The Captains' Return", a 23-foot,
9,000-pound bronze statue by sculptor
Harry Weber, featuring Meriwether Lewis,
William Clark and their dog Seaman, has
been removed from its mooring on the
St. Louis riverfront near the historic Eads
Bridge and Laclede's Landing.
Since its installation in 2006, the statue was often covered with flood water from the Mississippi River and needed to be restored. The statue will be returned to the riverfront summer of 2015 on Leonor K. Sullivan Boulevard. The new site, near the north leg
of the Gateway Arch, is about 17 feet higher and less prone to flooding and debris from the Mississippi River.
